First of all, hear the transcendental sound vibration.
Sravanam, or hearing, is the first step in acquiring transcendental knowledge. One should not give aural reception to unauthorized persons, but should approach the proper person, as recommended in Bhagavad Gita.
For a person who is suffering in the fire of countless miseries and who desires to cross the insurmountable ocean of material existence, there is no suitable boat except that of cultivating devotion to the transcendental taste for the narrations of the Supreme Personality of Godhead’s pastimes.
By hearing about and glorifying the Lord, all a person’s activities become molded into spiritual activities and thus all conceptions of material miseries become completely vanquished.
As a snake-bitten man is brought back to consciousness by the chanting of certain mantras, so one in the unconscious state of material life can be revived by hearing the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra.
One should avoid hearing from a person not situated in Vaisnava behaviour. A Vaisnava is nivrtta-trsna. That is, he has no material purpose, for his only purpose is to preach Krishna consciousness. So-called scholars, philosophers and politicians exploit the importance of Bhagavad Gita by distorting its meaning for their own purposes.
