Becoming A Robot

Following the rules and regulations doesn't make one a robot, because one of the rules is that we must engage in devotional service with love and devotion for Krishna. Rather, by not following the sastras one becomes a robot of maya.

Making The Heart Soft

One might become hardhearted by strictly following the rules and regulations if one is too eager to follow rules and regulations just for the sake of following. If one follows the rules and regulations strictly to please Krishna that makes the heart soft.
